It’s no wild secret – I love essential oils, I’ve loved them for years!
WHO uses essential oils?
Essential oils have been used for thousands of years. Throughout history, references have been made to the ancient oils of Frankincense and Mhyrr, and it is thought that the reference to the gold carried by one of the three wise men could well be referring to Turmeric.
Essential oils are still used today and can be found in many common areas of our lives – from cleaning products, to candles, incense, and perfumes, cooking and health care.
WHAT are essential oils?
Firstly, let’s be clear – when I refer to essential oils, I am referring to 100% pure essential oils sourced from the best indigenous providers from around the world.
What this means, for example, is that while say lavender can be grown anywhere in the world, there will be one place in the world where it grows at its optimum best to provide the highest grade properties without chemical intervention (spraying). When plants are grown optimally in their native surroundings, you will get the best product available.
Essential oils are extracted from the plant in one of two ways – via distillation, or via steam. The method used is dependant on the plant.
It’s really important to be aware that you do only get what you pay for! Cheaper oils may contain fillers and could well be made from lower grade produce. Be careful when buying oils to ensure that you are buying a quality product – after all, you will be absorbing it into your body one way or another!

WHY do I love essentials oils?
The reason I love essential oils is that they are such a big part of my day. My daily ritual involves oils in the morning, after I shower – to a cup of tea during the day, to keeping the diffuser going, cleaning around my house with non-toxic cleaners and learning more about them each and every day. I use roller blends to keep with me when I go out, I blend oils with massage oil for a bit of relaxation, I use spritz sprays to freshen the air (great for when the dog farts – hey, let’s be real here shall we??).
WHEN do you use essential oils?
ALL THE TIME! Crazy hey? Well, I even have a few recipes which use essential oils – ok, not a few – a LOT! Bliss balls move over, I have a mouth watering recipe that keeps you wanting more (even more than what a bag of chips does to you!!). When I have hayfever, I reach for the oils. When I have a sniffle, I reach for the oils. When I have a sore throat, I reach for the oils. When my hair needs a boost, I reach for the oils. When the filters on the exhaust fan over the stove need a good clean, I reach for the oils. When the dishwasher is getting a bit gungy, I reach for the oils. When I’m sick of drinking flavourless water…..you get the picture!
HOW do you use essential oils?
Anybody can use essential oils, and there are 3 primary ways of using them for support.
The first way is to use them aromatically – that is, via diffusion. It takes only 22 seconds for them to reach the brain when you use them with a diffuser or inhale the oils. Within 2 minutes of inhalation, they are in the bloodstream; and within 22 minutes they are being utilised throughout every cell in the body.
The second method is topically – through the skin. Remember to never apply essential oils “neat” to the skin, always use a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil to dilute the oil.
The third method is by ingestion. When taking oils orally, always check to make sure that they can be ingested, and never take more than what’s been recommended – you would never, ever sit down to a whole bottle of essential oil and consume the lot in one sitting.
Always check for any contraindications when using essential oils – also check to see if there could be any adverse effects when combined with prescription medicine.
